39am Final Project

23 Dec

For my final project in Interactivity, Installation, and Performace, I tried to create an interactive installation that led the viewer through a simulated space.  The goal of my project was to create a hanging installation with LED’s that was independent of a computer and wires.  I achieved this by using a battery-powered Arduino Duemilanove microcontroller to power the 70 LED’s I soldered onto a 5×2 piece of window screen.

The body of the piece was created with multiple pieces of shaped paper, cut into larger and larger sizes that increase by ¼ inch.  The paper was then hung from the screen to create an undulating form that mimics the shape of nudibranchs invertebrates.

Here is a max patch that allows max to communicate with arduino.  I wish I was using max in my project now and hadn’t designed an installation piece based on the absence of a laptop..boo

Draw into a jitter matrix

28 Nov

This patch allows you to draw directly into a jitter matrix.  For example you can add subtitles to a video.  I will so be using this in video art next semester.

DJ Carols jitter patch

This patch was designed by an MFA student named DJ Carol for some intense audio/visual vjing.  It’s a massive patch but super fun.

led light show using microcontroller and max

Here’s a patch I found at installation artist Stephen Belovarich’s site Installation Space.  Using a microcontroller and Max you can control a matrix of leds.

Jitter patches

31 Oct

Just a couple jitter patches I have been playing with.  This patch allows you to switch between movies with the a and b keys.

This allows you to make a smaller window in the matrix to view a movie.

Real People/Live People

27 Oct

For project 2 I want to create a patch inspired by Nam June Paiks TV Fish series, specifically Real fish/Live fish.  Unfortunately I cannot find any video documentation of his video but I did find some images.

The patch would have to include live video projecting over top of a live scene, like the outside of a building.  Theoretical patch goes like this, computer 1 has a webcam which records a bustling street.  That video is streamed live over the internet which is picked up by computer 2. Using a max patch computer 2 would take the live video and feed it to a projector which then projects the scene of the bustling street onto a building or something.  Here is a crude drawing to illustrate.

I forgot to draw the live people who would be walking outside of the building the projection is playing over, but you get the idea.

Some videos to consider for Project 2.

Random numbers drive video.  I’m trying to figure out what to do with this and what project I can use it for.

Jit.gl.asyncread Object

24 Oct

This is another patch I found on the cyclying 74 website.  You can use this patch to record video, but first you have to use the jit.gl.asyncread object allows you to rastarize a video then use the jit.qt.record to record the video.
